Sunu Gaal (Our Cayuco)

Josep T. Paris
Why do so many Africans dream of Europe? Sunu Gaal follows young Senegalese debating whether to stay or embark on a journey full of obstacles.
Josep T. París is a documentary film director, screenwriter, and journalist whose career has been shaped by his commitment to migration movements and the fight against racism. In his reports and documentaries, he works closely with the protagonists to ensure a collaborative creative process that authentically and respectfully reflects their lives. In 2020, he co-directed Mama Congo. Dones al cor de l’Àfrica (Mother Congo. Women at the Heart of Africa) for TV3’s 30 Minuts programme, focusing on the feminist struggle in the Congo. The Congo is a country ravaged by violence against women, and the West has often reduced Congolese women to mere statistics. This documentary aimed to raise awareness and change this perception. In 2018, Menors lluny de casa (Minors Far from Home), a 30 Minuts documentary, was the first to provide an in- depth account of immigrant minors arriving in Catalonia without family support. Until then, the media had often portrayed them as criminals, but for the first time, this documentary gave them a platform to criticize the institutional racism they faced. Trained as a screenwriter and playwright at the Taller de Guionistes, the Ateneu Barcelonès Writing School, and the Sala Beckett Drama Centre, he has received several awards for his texts and scripts. In 2023, he was a finalist for the Frederic Roda Theatre Award with La família de Silicona, and in 2019, he won the Ciutat de Manacor Award with Piròmans, which was published in December of that year. He holds degrees in journalism and law and has worked in various media outlets.
