Ruth

Maya (26), a young Londoner, travels to her late girlfriend Ruth’s hometown, where no one knows her. There, she discovers Ruth was not out and is reduced to “the friend from London.” As she tries to say goodbye at the funeral, Maya must confront grief, silence, and a truth they never shared.

Screenwriter, director and script consultant. She has written for fiction series such as Los hombres de Paco, HKM and Generación dF, and is co-writer of the feature film ROBOTA MML by Itziar Barrio, a film produced by CO Producciones, Naves Matadero and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), recently premiered at e-flux Screening Room in New York and at Matadero Madrid. As a director, she has helmed the short film Ruth—screened at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival and awarded Best Short Film at Abycine, among others—a piece that serves as a direct precursor to the feature film Maya. She has also developed various audiovisual projects, directing content for communication agencies, including corporate videos, commercials and event content. In addition to her work as a screenwriter and director, Sonia was a founding member of the RIZOMA Festival, where she has worked as a programmer, head of content and communications across several editions, and she is currently part of the selection committee for the RIZOMA Film Award. At the same time, she collaborates as a script analyst and consultant for production companies such as Pecado Films, DEBUT Films and Mansalva Films. She has been a mentor in programs such as Coofilm—the artistic residency for women filmmakers focused on work-life balance—and teaches screenwriting at the TAI Arts University. She is a member of the CIMA. She is currently developing the feature film Maya, which has been supported by prominent initiatives such as the D’A Film Lab, the Summer Campus of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain (2024), and the Ibermedia CDPAI grant for the development of Ibero-American projects.
