In 1987 she co-wrote and directed her first film, Tres en la marca. In 1990 she co-wrote and directed El viaje del agua, which won the Goya Award for best Spanish documentary that same year. Then in 1992 she directed her first full-length film, Una estación de paso, which received numerous awards. After writing and directing the documentary film El trabajo de rodar (1993), she returned to fiction film with El último viaje de Robert Rylands (1995).
Her third feature film, Cuando vuelvas a mi lado (1999) received a Special Mention of the Jury at the Festival of San Sebastian for the quality of its directing and acting. It received eight Goya Award nominations: Best Film, Director, Editing, Cinematography and Music. She co-wrote and filmed Héctor (2004), for which she received the Golden Biznaga for Best Film at the Festival de Malaga, 4 Goya Award nominations, among other honors. Over the course of 2006 she received three awards for her career work.
For Siete mesas de billar francés (2006) she received such major awards including the Best Screenplay Award at the Film Festival of San Sebastian, 10 Goya Award nominations in 2007: Best Film, Director, Screenplay, Actress (Maribel Verdú and Blanca Portillo), Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, Cinematography, Editing and Sound, the 2007 Goya to Maribel Verdú (leading actress) and Amparo Baró (supporting Actress) and the CEC Award for Best Film of 2007. In 2008 she shot a short film sponsored by the Ministry of Equality as part of the campaign "- es +. Cine para ser la voz de quienes callan. In 2013 she made her next feature film 15 años y un día. And between 2000 and 2008 she has made advertising films.
